For the Birds

Filed under: Nature — allmycke @ 6:50 pm

I really like the English name for this tree – bird cherry! The fruits look a bit like cherries and are very popular among our avian friends.

Bird Cherry

The Swedish name isn’t nearly as descriptive – actually I have no idea what it means but I suppose it’s a very old word.

Beavers

Filed under: Nature — allmycke @ 4:16 pm

These pictures are taken in about the same place as were I got the shot of the sky I posted the other day.

Busy Beaver

The beavers has been at it in this spot during a couple of summers – judging by the darker parts of wood where they have been attempting to fell this tree. It looked as if someone had destroyed a dam right by the road ( the landowner is a safe bet) which may have discouraged the beaver last summer.

Busy Beaver 2

I know beavers can wreak havoc in large areas with their dams – in some places they are considered almost as vermin, but I still admire their industriousness.

I am having trouble uploading pictures I want to post… I’ve tried every trick I knew and then some – I may have to change from F*refox to something else. Any suggestions?

No, not IE.

Love This Green

Filed under: Nature — allmycke @ 9:18 pm

Maple in bloomI’m no big lover of green, but the different hues among young maples leaves combined with the yellow flowers – that I really like!

Bright Skies

Filed under: Funny stuff, Important stuff, Things that make me happy — allmycke @ 8:04 pm

One would have thought that I was totally jinxed on Monday when I was getting ready to leave, but after a few false starts – at work and at home, I could finally leave. Along the road, I decided to check out a tiny side-road and I did find something of interest, but I need to tweak the pictures a bit. This one is however just as it came off the camera.

Window of Opportunity

I almost took this view as a good sign, because my mind had been racing quite a bit… What if the X-Rays would show something suspicious? What if the blood samples told a story? What if…

As it turned out, I was making myself hyper quite without cause since I came through the check-up with flying colours. I won’t need to go back there for another check-up until March next year. What a relief!

BTW – The course I went to today was well worth the money! First of all the lecturer confirmed a number of things that I have believed in and used as a basis for my teaching  – not to mention that I also learned quite a few new things.  He also gave us “homework” – to ask our students what the expression Woot! stands for… I’ve seen it used in comments every now and then, but sort of expected that I’d be able to find out the meaning of it by chance, but now I’ll just pose the question here: What the heck does it mean?

Rain, Rain Go Away…

Filed under: Nature, Photography — allmycke @ 3:07 pm

This picture tells me that camping anywhere towards the border could have been a wet affair last night. (Yes, I’m trying to convince myself that I haven’t missed anything…)

Rainy DayI didn’t notice the two geese until I pulled up the picture to full size on the computer. Figure the odds!

Nature Reclaiming Territory

Filed under: Nature, Photography — allmycke @ 6:55 pm

I spoke too soon… My plans for a shorter camping trip came to nothing, as my bum hip has started acting up. Under the circumstances I didn’t think it wise to spend a couple of nights in a tent – I need  a softer bed than what is possbile roughing it while camping.

Old barn

This old barn is part of an old homestead in a beautiful spot just outside town. It’s only accessible by boat – or by walking about 2 km from the end of a loggers road. That’s what I did the other day.

Old barn2Who were they, the people that homesteaded here?

Crop Circles

Filed under: Funny stuff, Nature — allmycke @ 7:34 pm

I’m sure most of you have read about or heard of crop circles (IF you haven’t – Google it!)  and the accompanying theories of what they are all about. What’s your take on this, then?

Circles

How is it possible that ice melts leaving patterns like this?

Due northwest

My plans for Ascension Day includes a trip towards the Norwegian border – but looking at the myriad of clouds coming from that direction, I don’t know…. The weather report tomorrow will help me decide if I should head out or not – but a night or two in the tent close to a creek and with a fire in front of me would be therapy, soul-mending and fresh air all at once.

More About Tin Cans

Filed under: Friends I really like, Things that make me happy — allmycke @ 6:52 pm

Remember this post? Shortly after I posted this I received a mail from Indigo in BC, Canada who wanted to send me some old cookie tins (I just realized that I was using the wrong expression for this particular kind of container…. Oh well, what can I say? Even the sun has its spots!) In any event – today I picked up this parcel at the parcel-pick-up-place:

ParcelI especially like the picture of Indigo and her husband on top of the box – they look so happy.

HMQ

The colours on the round tin reminds me of design from the 50’s or maybe 60’s. It’ll be used for Swedish hardtack bread which will become soft and almost inedible if not stored properly in the summer. The other one – commemorating the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959, will be filled with candy and have a place of honour on my desk, once I move into my new office in August. It’s a bit scuffed from being used and perfectly lovely!

Tin Cans

The big one with the signs of the Zodiac has a natural place on my sewing table where it’ll house some sewing supplies that are currently without a proper home. The red Lovely is already filled with cotton balls and placed on the dresser in my bathroom – next to the mini-plunger Michael gave me after my disatrous try at guessing the birth weight of their second daughter, Halia… Finally, the octagonal tin! This one has contained Peak Frean biscuits of some sort – but boy do I remember the shape and that type of handle from my childhood! Mom had a square tin with the same type of handle and thick lid – the fate of which I am not privy to. I suspect it may have been broken some time after I moved away from home. In any event – I now have a perfect tin for tea. It has an absolutely natural place next to my teapot – or no?

Teapot

This tin has a soul, it’s been used and handled, the paint is chipped and it’s a bit dented. It’s perfect!
