In really old photographs, people didn’t smile because they had to hold the pose for so long. But I think that was about 50 years before this one was taken. Perhaps it was merely a habit at this point, to not smile for the photographer?
Jen – I think the main reason for the solemn faces was that most people had never been in front of a photographer before their wedding (or as part of a wedding party). I know of only one picture of my aunt taken before her wedding…

I’ve always wondered why people didn’t smile much in photos back then. Love seeing old photos like this , though.
