I’m Angry

During the last 6 months I’ve been on the outskirts of a family situation involving two parents and a child with special needs. The parents split up in June 2013 and since then there has been a lot of bad blood between the two of them. At school, we’ve tried to make sure the child would feel secure and loved – no matter what happened in her life outside school.

What I can not understand, is why a parent would use their child as a bat in the battle against a former husband.

Yes, I could split branches with my teeth to vent… Loki chewes on branches because he’s so darnded happy!

  1. Karen – There are quite a few things I’d LIKE to do, but precious few that would be smart. Except making sure that this girl always feels safe at school, that we help her make sense out of the world around her and continue building her self esteem.

  2. I’m so sorry.

When we were kids, parents would sometimes knock our heads together if we fought… this scenario sounds like the right time to employ such a tactic. (Well, not really, because concussions are bad… but you know what I mean!)

  3. I’ve seen the same scenario so many times and it’s always heartbreaking to see the child/children used as tools in the battle between their parents.
In this case it becomes even more heartwrenching as the child has Downs Syndrome. She is a compassionate, wonderful girl but can’t grasp all this in any other way than the most “obvious” – Dad moved out = he’s bad. Mom is still there = she’s good… vehemently reiforced by the Mother…
This doesn’t jive with the fact that she misses her Dad – and needs them both in her life.

Thank you for letting me vent!

  4. Very difficult when adults refuse to be adults. My BIL won’t see his teenage kids because the mother divorced him. Mom did everything right. Very sad.
